Ain't the Way I Wrote It

How come nobody follows the script in our heads?

Ain't the Way I Wrote It

Every day I write the script

for the whole, cold world but I guess I slipped

'cause nobody out there ever seems to know their lines.

I say something simple like, “ It's getting hot."

Then they say something weird like, "You're not a patriot,"

"It's American weather, and we don't like your kind."

That ain't the way I wrote it in my mind.

In my mind, everything works

and the earth opens up and swallows up the jerks,

and preachers don't try to scare me with the next life.

And in my mind, I'm not myself,

but a better, richer, smarter someone else,

and bi-polar's just an Arctic bear with a pretty cool sex life.

Another night in any old city

and I'm all slicked up and feeling pretty witty,

and I go out to see what I can find.

But the cops stop me from walking around.

They say, "Go home, boy, we done closed this town,

"Are you some kind of fool?  Didn't you see the sign?"

That ain't the way I wrote it in my mind.

In my mind, I'm influential

and everybody sees my potential

and the Wal-Mart clerk doesn't look at me like I'm stupid.

And I can smoke wherever I choose

and nothing I step on sticks to my shoes.

And any line I'm in is the only one that's moving.

But every morning, I've got to try again

to bet on all the beginnings and ends,

but I come up rolling snake-eyes every time.

I ask Lady Luck, "Lady, what's your plan?"

She says, "Aw lighten up, I'm only playing with you man.

"Just eat your damn sandwich, and try not to whine.”

That ain't the way I wrote it in my mind.

Ain't the way I wrote it in my mind.

Ain't the way I wrote it in my mind.

Ain't the way I wrote it in my mind.
